Paint it Black- Siobhan Magnus (AI9) vs Sumera (Xfactor 2010)

A lot has been said about XFactor's Sumera ripping off American Idol Season 9 Top 6 favorite Siobhan Magnus' performance of "Paint it Black."

Paint it Black was originally sung by The Rolling Stones. Many versions were made but this arrangement has been the most popular. Though Siobhan made a few small changes to 'make it her own', Sumera definitely seems to be copying the 'Siobhan' version.

Do we need ask...Which performance do you prefer, Siobhan's or Sumera's?

  1. Honestly, Sumera did great, she has wonderful control of her voice and she fit the song perfectly (outfit and all) but it almost felt that she was trying to hard with her apperance.
Siobhan on the other hand, her voice just gives you goosebumps, the beginning makes you melt, since her voice unlike Sumera's is very smooth. The scream in that song is deifinatly unbeat, and the end part sounds like a conclusion to the song. Like after all that tireless anger you just finally sigh (While singing Paint it Black). Sumera was still sort of adding to the song instead of finishing it

  3. There are a lot of Sumera and Siobhan fans spamming each other's videos. I don't hate sumera's version at all unlike some people, but I feel that Siobhan put so much more into her version, including putting raw emotion in it throughout, which I thought was something Sumera left out.

But don't think for a second that my view is unbiased, because Siobhan is my favorite American Idol contestant ever!

  4. Stylistically I prefer Siobhan's cover of "Paint It Black". Sumera has a nice voice, but it is is not suited for rock. Siobhan is a rocker and carries out the song with intensity and emotion that is hard to match.

  5. Why at the first place someone tried to compare Siobhan with Sumera. Siobhan's haters or Sumera's fans, parents or the producer of Netherlands X-Factor? It is very obvious that singing and music arrangement of Siobhan's version is the base for Sumera's version. In the last part of the song, Sumera tried to sound different to escape the high notes. But that made the song like a rock climber climbs up in competitive mode but suddenly 2 steps downwards. Actually, their quality of voices are different. Sumera's voice is more sentimental. But for signing theoretically with progressive high notes, Siobhan voice will have much more impact on audience's ear or even heart.

By the way, fans or Entertainment journalists may need to keep the record of who and when which song was sung because one day the one sing first may be reported as copycat of the latter one. This is what a true artist of creativity hates the most.

  6. I think Siobhan Magnus is better than Sumera, because Siobhan scream at the end, and this will make the song become good and rock.

  9. Best way to compare Sumera to Siobhan is to listen to their covers of "Halo". Sumera did it for her "X-Factor" audition and Siobhan sang it in the living room of a house while playing a piano. Strip away the staging and instrumentals and all you are left with are the singers themselves.

Sumera can hit the notes, but she does not sustain them, and her singing sounds a bit clipped as a result. There is also little in the way of emotion from a very emotional song as sung by Sumera. While the Dutch Judges seemed impressed, I could not help but wonder if Sumera would even be chosen to be in the final 24 on American Idol. i.e. Ashley Rodriquez has a much better voice than Sumera and is one of the most beautiful women on the show, did not advance beyond the top 24.

Siobhan on the other hand does an amazing version of "Halo". I am a Beyonce fan, I liked Beyonce's version of "Halo". I loved Siobhan's version even though the audio is horrible (it was captured by webcams). Shirley Halprin, the entertainment writer for the LA Times was there and she was just floored. Siobhan connects so beautifully with her music and sounds angelic performing this song.

I think that Kara, who was recently quoted as saying that she did not see Siobhan as a mainstream recording artist had heard Siobhan covering "Halo" or the Hanson songs during her visit to the "If I Can Dream" set with Alex Lambert, she would reconsider her judgment of Siobhan. Those songs, along with "Wicked Game" and "House of the Rising Sun" are all songs I can easily listen to on the radio.

  10. That girl Sumera did a decent karaoke cover of Siobhan. No comparison. No "scream", but then again, how many can "scream" like Siobhan and make it sound SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD!
Don't try to imitate Siobhan, it will just end badly for you!

  11. Siobhan did better. The other woman tried to do Siobhans famous ending and had an epic fail trying.
